SOLARIS
About the Project
SOLARIS (Strengthening democratic engagement through value-based generative adversarial networks) is part of the Horizon Europe research cluster focused on the intersection of politics, online social networks, and new media. Spanning 36 months from February 2023, the project unites 13 partners from 8 countries to tackle the challenges posed by fake news, echo chambers, and deepfakes. The circulation of fake news and the rise of deepfakes threaten EU democracies, creating echo chambers and polarizing public opinion. The project seeks to address these challenges by understanding and mitigating the risks associated with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) while exploring their potential to enhance democratic engagement.
Project Objectives
Deepfake risk mitigation
Analyze political risks and propose regulatory innovations to prevent the misuse of GANs in spreading fake news and propaganda.
Promoting digital citizenship
Leverage GANs to create engaging, value-driven multimedia content that raises awareness about global challenges, such as climate change, gender equality, and migration.
Citizen co-creation
Use participatory methods, including co-creation workshops and consultations, to align GANs-generated content with the values and expectations of citizens across Europe.
Impact analysis
Evaluate the diffusion and effectiveness of value-based GANs content in enhancing democratic engagement through sentiment analysis, social network studies, and stakeholder consultations.
DEXAI's role in SOLARIS project
As a key partner in SOLARIS, DEXAI focuses on ensuring that the development and deployment of GANs are guided by ethical principles, societal values, and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
Our key contributions
Value-Sensitive Design (VSD)
Implement a Value-Sensitive Design methodology to ensure GANs reflect diverse societal values, promoting inclusivity and addressing key social challenges such as climate change and gender equality. Guide co-creation workshops with citizens to define the ethical and social dimensions of GANs-generated content.
Stakeholder engagement
Facilitate round tables, focus groups, and participatory consultations to gather insights from diverse stakeholders, including citizens, NGOs, and policymakers.
Collaborate with partners to crowdsource ideas and expectations about the role of GANs in digital citizenship.
Monitoring and evaluation
Analyze the societal impact of GANs-generated content through advanced techniques such as sentiment analysis and actor-network theory and develop feedback loops to refine and optimize the effectiveness of AI-driven media in fostering democratic engagement.
