LUCIA
About the Project
LUCIA is a project under the Horizon Europe Programme. As one of the 20 partners from academia, research organizations, NGOs, hospitals, and industry, we are proud to contribute to this initiative.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite tobacco smoking being a significant risk factor, many cases remain unexplained, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the disease. Additionally, the current standard for screening, Low-Dose Computed Tomography, is underutilized and has shown limited impact on reducing lung cancer mortality.
Project Objectives
LUCIA aims to change this narrative by developing a robust toolbox to uncover and analyze the risk factors contributing to lung cancer. The project focuses on three interconnected domains:
Personal Risk Factors
Behavioral patterns, lifestyle choices, and chemical exposure.
External Risk Factors
The influence of urban environments, social conditions, and climate.
Cellular Processes
Genetic, epigenetic, and metabolic changes linked to lung cancer.
By validating these risk factors through clinical use cases, LUCIA seeks to revolutionize lung cancer screening, targeting general populations, high-risk groups, and advancing digital diagnostics. Ultimately, the project will translate these findings into actionable policies to support innovative and effective screening programs.
DEXAI's role in LUCIA project
As the Ethics Partner of the LUCIA project, Dexai ensures that the integration of AI technology in healthcare adheres to the highest ethical standards. Our mission revolves around creating reliable, transparent, and fair AI systems that empower both patients and medical professionals.
Our key contributions
Ethical Framework Development
DEXAI designs and implements ethical evaluation models tailored for the LUCIA project. These models guide partners in navigating the societal implications of AI technology, from data analysis to clinical application.

We ensure that all AI systems developed within LUCIA are fully interpretable by meticulously documenting training processes and decision-making criteria, as well as presenting results in a manner that is easily understandable for clinicians to enhance trust and usability.
